Poitou Donkey
Poitou Donkeys are an endangered breed of donkey, life-size teddy bears but Jake is much more than an adorable fuzzy face.
History of Poitou Donkeys
The Poitou is an ancient French breed developed in the Poitou region of France, where mule breeding has been documented for over one thousand years and is the origin of Poitou Donkeys. Poitou jacks were bred to mares to produce mules for both riding and work. The breed nearly became extinct after World War II, when the demand for mules collapsed. Fewer than 80 Poitous survived in 1980.
Our donkey Jake’s lineage can be traced back to one of these original 80 French Poitou.

Poitou Donkey Conservation Efforts
Today the Poitou are labeled critically endangered and breeders across the world are working together to ensure the future of this unique, beautiful breed.
Due to their large size and slower rate of reproduction, they have been in decline for many years, and efforts are now being made to conserve the breed. Several organizations, such as the Association Française de l'Âne des Pyrénées et des Landes and the Livestock Conservancy, are working to protect and promote Poitou Donkeys. These conservation efforts include breeding programs, education, and outreach to raise awareness about the breed's importance and the need to preserve it. These conservation efforts are crucial to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy and appreciate the unique beauty and charm of Poitou Donkeys.
Things to consider if a Poitou is right for your farm
It’s essential now more than ever that we have conservationists taking care of this breed but they are not without their issues!
Poitou offspring typically have health issues within the first week of life. Texas Poitou donkey has worked closely with a local Texas University to develop a veterinary protocol to address these issues. It’s important to have veterinary support if you are considering owning a Poitou.
Price - an adorable donkey will cost you. Since their population is so limited, it is expected that a Poitou Donkey will range between $8,000- $20,000 depending on lineage and quality.
It is estimated that only 75 Pure Poitou exist in the US today.
We adore these goofy, gentle giants and are so thrilled to be working on saving the breed for future generations.
